Our 12-month Sports Physical Therapy Residency is an intensive, comprehensive training experience to prepare clinicians for advanced practice in sports rehabilitation. Residents will complete 1,500 hours of clinical practice, including 150 hours of direct mentorship with board-certified sports physical therapy specialists, along with more than 300 hours of structured educational programming. This rigorous blend of hands-on experience and targeted learning ensures a strong foundation for clinical excellence in the field of sports physical therapy.

  • Annual activity expectations - varied over 12 months
    • Contact sports and trauma
    • Evaluation and differential diagnoses
    • Plan of care development for return to participation, sport, and performance
    • Athletic training room and sports sideline exposure
    • Sports injury screenings
    • Assisting pre-participation physicals
    • Various sports athletes in clinic, including, but not limited to, baseball, soccer, football, dance, gymnastics, golf, hockey, track & field, etc
  • Weekly/monthly activity expectations
    • 30 hours per week
      • Independent Clinical Care
      • Progression of Diagnostic/Prognostic Training
      • Sports Physical Therapy at TrinityElite Clinic with Sports Certified Specialist PTs
    • 3.5 hours per week
      • 1:1 mentored patient care – resident providing care
    • 1.5 hours per week
      • 1:1 mentored competency practice and completion
    • 2-4 hours per week
      • Training room coverage and sideline acute injury and emergency management with Licensed Athletic Trainer
    • 5-10 hours per month
      • Teaching assistant position with Wayne State University’s 3rd-year exercise class
      • Sports Performance Team, small group and 1:1 Training
      • Research
      • Sports Journal Club
      • Orthopedic case rounds
      • Sports Orthopedic and Primary Care Physician Clinical and Surgical Observation/Education
