Emergency Department Expansion and Reimagination

For every patient in crisis, the Emergency Department (ED) serves as the hospital’s front door—providing the most critical, life-saving care, managing complex cases, and connecting individuals to inpatient services and surgical interventions.

The Trinity Health Ann Arbor ED is facing rising patient volumes, longer visits, and higher acuity. Our ED drives 61% of inpatient discharges and nearly half of surgeries, with visits up 6.9% since 2024. One-third of patients are 65+, well above the 23% national average.

Its current treatment spaces are insufficient to provide an optimal and reverent experience. While our team delivers superior care, hallway stretchers underscore the need for immediate action to reimagine the ED. Persistent demand and limited space make this transformation necessary for patient safety, timely treatment, and staff support.

Why Now?

Our team cares for patients in nearly 90,000 visits a year – that means 247 people each day and more than 10 people every hour needing care NOW. The ED is stretched beyond capacity, with continual overflow. Urgent action is needed to address staff and bed shortages. Patients with complex needs in Neurosciences, Cardiovascular, Oncology, and Orthopedics often begin in the ED, where care must be safe, timely, and high-quality.

These pressures affect every patient—from a mother waiting hours with a crying baby to seniors needing a comforting environment for their complex conditions.

What will your support accomplish?

Improved Patient Environment

Redesign the ED to eliminate hallway care, nearly doubling our availability of private rooms from 59 to 95 and reducing open treatment bays from 61 to 19. This 118-treatment-space layout necessitates significant structural updates and expanded footage to provide patients with a private, dignified environment, supported by modern systems and enhanced facilities, improving patient experience.

Modernize for Quality Outcomes

Transform the ED to deliver the safest, effective, and compassionate care for patients. Equip the team with the latest tools to ease workload and create an environment ready for high volumes and acuity. This pivotal project will replace and expand aging infrastructure, adding private rooms that reduce infection risk, support personalized care, and empower clinicians to provide the highest standard of emergency care and improved patient outcomes.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • Additional private rooms and stretcher bays to avoid hallway chairs and stretchers
  • New patient entry addressing safety, visibility and wayfinding concerns
  • Additional CT scanner and ultrasound within the Emergency Department for efficient and timely care
  • Additional space for staff and clinical operations for enhanced efficiencies, safety and experience
  • The same exceptional physician and care team you know and love
  • Flexible spaces with modern finishes and advanced technology
  • Enhanced design to create a more calming, healing environment for both physical and mental health.

Neuroscience Institute Will Create One-Stop Access to Complex Care

While the expanded Emergency Department will strengthen our community’s access to timely, lifesaving care, the need does not end once a patient is stabilized. Many of the most complex cases presenting through the ED—stroke, traumatic brain injury, seizure disorders, and neurological emergencies—require seamless transition into highly specialized neurosciences care. That is why Trinity Health Ann Arbor is simultaneously advancing the growth of our Neurosciences Institute to provide advanced diagnosis and treatment in one comprehensive facility, ensuring patients receive coordinated, state-of-the-art care from the moment of crisis through recovery.

“With philanthropic partnership, we have the opportunity to redefine what’s possible in neuroscience care for our community. Together, we can accelerate discovery, expand access to advanced treatments, and train the next generation of clinical leaders. The future of brain and spine care in Ann Arbor can be one of innovation, compassion, and hope—and philanthropy makes that future possible.”

Current Situation

The inception of the Trinity Health Ann Arbor Neuroscience Institute, made possible by a generous $10 million gift, laid the foundation for providing patients with earlier diagnosis, advanced treatments, and hope in the face of life-altering neurological diseases. With further funding, the Institute can expand and coordinate care that positively impacts the lives of patients facing complex neurological conditions.

In Michigan, 202,800 residents over 65 live with Alzheimer’s, highlighting the need for better care. Stroke hospitalizations for those under 50 have risen 44% over the past decade.

The need for this Institute is paramount, as Southeast Michigan contends with an aging population affected by Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Lewy Body, Vascular, and other medical issues such as stroke and epilepsy. Our physician researchers are advancing care and developing tools like early-detection blood tests, offering new hope—even as the challenges of these conditions persist.

Why Now?

Our physicians are on the front line of neuroscience, witnessing the growing complexity of patient needs every day. They are treating our family and friends, bringing together services and expertise for a fully realized Institute. By FY2027, we expect 3,000 patients annually. With philanthropy, the Institute will stand as a hub of innovation and healing, expanding access to advanced treatments and transforming outcomes for countless lives.

What will your support accomplish?

Neuroscience United

Building a world-class Neuroscience Institute—where patients can access every service under one roof—requires significant investment. Benefactor funding will unite specialists and programs, streamline care, reduce waiting times, and enhance patient experiences and quality of life.

Philanthropy will also fuel research in early detection and breakthrough treatments, expand access to clinical trials, and prepare the next generation of neuroscientists with innovative tools to push the boundaries of what’s possible in neuroscience.

Program Development and Expansion:

Trinity Health Ann Arbor is excited to embark upon work to further its Neurosciences program. This project focuses on three areas:

  • Enhanced, Expanded Clinical Space: Increase of space allocated to our neurology ambulatory clinic on campus. Creating a one-stop approach for our neuro subspecialists, neurosurgery, and neurodiagnostics in one convenient location. Enhancing the patient experience through convenience and ease of co-located neuro outpatient services.

This expansion advances care in the following specialties

Stroke and cerebrovascular disease Neuromuscular disorders Memory disorders Movement disorders Osteopathic manipulative medicine
Epilepsy Multiple sclerosis Sleep disorders Physical medicine and spine Back pain and spinal disorders
  • Program Development: Committed to hiring additional dedicated specialists and clinicians, including four Neuro Subspecialists (dementia, Headache, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s/Movement Disorders), Nurse Navigator, Education Nurses, and Social Workers. Initiating an endowment fund to support physician time dedicated to research and teaching, and the development of a neurology residency program.

Build specialized capacity for neurological care by creating a seamless, specialized treatment area where all equipment and specialists needed for personalized care, as well as providing patients and families with the guidance and ongoing support they need under one roof.

  • Elevation of Care: The institute aims to become one of the leading centers in Michigan for the treatment of complex neurological conditions, particularly in stroke and Alzheimer’s care.

We Look Forward to Connecting with You.
