Why I chose this program/location for my training

During my interview, I paid close attention to how the residents talked about each other and how they interacted with their faculty. There was something easy and natural about it. When residents spoke about their faculty, you could tell the relationship went beyond just teaching.

Watching how everyone interacted with each other made that even clearer. A program that builds that kind of culture, while also being deeply committed to training well-rounded physicians, is exactly where I want to grow.

Hobbies/what I do outside of work

Outside of medicine, I enjoy playing video games, especially with friends – it's my favorite way to unwind. I also have a lifelong love for soccer, both playing and watching that goes all the way back to my childhood.

Why I chose this program/location for my training

Trinity Health Muskegon appealed to me because of its emphasis on resident well-being, the wide mix of clinical cases and the diverse patient population. My interest in the program was further solidified after spending time with the residents, attendings and staff during my fourth year medical school. Plus, being 10 minutes away from the beach is definitely an added bonus.

Hobbies/what I do outside of work

Growing up in Denver, I have always enjoyed the outdoors, especially backpacking, camping, hiking and snowboarding. I also picked up pickleball while I was in San Antonio and am hoping to continue playing it during residency. In my free time, I enjoy watching sports, going to the gym, cooking and spending time with my family and friends.

The top two reasons I chose Trinity Health Muskegon for training were the people and the learning environment. Everyone involved in the residency program is supportive, motivated and welcoming. They create a comfortable space for trainees to develop through hands-on experience.

And my spouse is a Family Medicine resident here, being in the same location made this an easy decision.

I have always wanted to work closer to where my family lives. As such, West Michigan was where I had hoped to match. Trinity Health Michigan impressed me with their dedication to holistically treating their patients as well as ensuring thorough training for their residents. I felt that at Trinity Health Michigan, I would have the best opportunities for success. I really enjoyed meeting the residents, the attending physicians, and the program director; they were all so genuinely friendly, not to mention brilliant.

Lastly, of the programs in West Michigan, I felt the most "at-home" when I visited Trinity Health Michigan.

Hobbies/interests outside of work

I have been producing my own music for nearly a decade, and I play the bass guitar, electric/acoustic guitar, piano, drums, etc. I have been brewing beer for four years, and as of 2022, I am a member of the American Homebrewer's Association. I am a licensed advanced open water diver. Explored a few shipwrecks in the South Caribbean. Went on several spearfishing trips to clear the reefs of the invasive Lionfish.

I am self-taught in Italian (intermediate fluency) and also a recreational soccer player, started learning in 2022. I usually play as center back or left wing. I'm also a 5k runner.

While interviewing over zoom made getting a “feel” for programs difficult, the people I met during my time with Trinity Health Michigan seemed genuinely happy to be working together, and were all excited to share their experiences and advice with newly-minted medical graduates. Additionally, the community aspect, and close-knit resident classes appealed to me for a more collaborative professional environment.

Finally, the appeal of a hands-on learning approach was a high priority for me, and both the residents and the preceptors I spoke with highlighted this as a strength of the Trinity program.

I love cooking, especially trying new recipes. My wife and I also take every opportunity to enjoy the outdoors – hiking, camping, cycling, etc. When I have the free time, I’m also apt to enjoy reading, playing music (though boy am I out of practice) video games and (mostly disc-based) sports!
