Hobbies/interests outside of work

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time outdoors, whether it is walking, golfing, or being out on the lake boating. I also enjoy shopping, relaxing at the beach with friends, and spending time with my family and our goldendoodle, Myla.

Why I chose this program/location for my training

I chose Trinity Health Muskegon because I had consistently heard positive things about the program, particularly its supportive, family-like culture where preceptors and colleagues genuinely care about residents' personal and professional development. During my interview, those impressions were reinforced by how welcoming and approachable everyone was.

Another factor that drew me to this program was the strong relationship between the residents and preceptors. I highly value an environment where residents feel comfortable seeking guidance, asking questions and learning from their mentors. I believe that these close working relationships foster both professional growth and confidence, making Trinity Health Muskegon an ideal place for me to continue my education.

Hobbies/interests outside of work

Outside of work, I enjoy a variety of activities that help me maintain a healthy work-life balance. I love reading books, painting and drawing, which allow me to unwind after a busy day. From the start, I was drawn to the supportive and family-like culture that this program fosters. In addition to the amazing culture here, I was also very interested in the ambulatory care electives that are offered. It is rare to have the opportunity to staff in an ambulatory care clinic throughout the entire PGY1 year, which made this program really stand out to me. I am grateful that I get to continue my pharmacy career here at Trinity Health.

I had the pleasure of being a pharmacy student at Trinity Health Muskegon during my fourth year of pharmacy school and really enjoyed the culture that was present throughout Trinity Health Muskegon. I was drawn to the PGY1 pharmacy residency program due to the numerous learning opportunities and the ability to take ambulatory care electives.

I was initially interested in Trinity Health Muskegon because of the variety of rotations offered, and after meeting everyone at a couple of residency showcases, I was able to learn more about the supportive learning environment. I completed my fourth-year clinical rotations at Trinity Health Muskegon, which exposed me to the comradery between employees at this health system and the excellent patient care delivered at this health system. The PGY1 pharmacy residency here offers diverse rotation offerings that will allow me to gain a well-rounded experience as a new pharmacist.

I also enjoy that this program is in West Michigan since it is so close to the lakeshore and there are many outdoor activities to partake in.

My hobbies/interests mainly involve getting outside and staying active. I really enjoy riding my bike, taking my dogs for walks and finding new trails to hike. I also enjoy playing card games and boards game with friends and family in my free time.

Why I chose this program/location for my training

I was looking for PGY1 programs with a focus in ambulatory care. I knew this was the right field for me and wanted to obtain as much experience from preceptors who have years of practice experience in clinics. I loved that Mercy Health had a strong role in the community with multiple clinics throughout West Michigan. My interview day sold me on the program. Everyone I interacted with was welcoming and made the interview process relaxed. I knew surrounding myself around good people throughout a stressful year of residency was essential to my success.

Advice to residency candidates: Gain as much experience in different areas of pharmacy to determine what your ideal pharmacist role looks like. Challenge yourself by putting yourself in situations outside of your comfort zone because this is a huge opportunity for personal growth. Never settle for complacency because as pharmacists we need to continue growing our clinical knowledge.

My first rotation of my 4th year was at Affinia Health where I worked within Mercy Health’s Network. It was there that I had the best experience working with colleagues that I knew I wanted to stay within this health system. I have always had a passion for chronic disease state management and wished to pursue an ambulatory care track which led me to Mercy Health’s Ambulatory-focused Residency Program.

Advice to residency candidates: When looking for a residency program, it is your responsibility to be picky. I know this sounds odd, but you don’t want to apply to a program just to get a residency because you think you need to do one. You want to pick a program that fits your needs and will help you meet and exceed your future goals. I recommend really taking your time to get to know the program, the program director, current residents, preceptors, and anyone else involved in the program. Take advantage of all the opportunities to meet these people and come with questions, LOTS of questions. Ask questions that will help you determine if this program fits your needs. Remember you are interviewing us as well!

Why I chose this program/location for my training

Completing my APPEs at Mercy Health in Muskegon and working closely with the pharmacy team allowed me to observe first-hand how the residency program operates, how the preceptors facilitate learning, and how quickly the previous residents became confident pharmacists. Mercy Health proved to be a superb learning environment for students and residents, which made me want to continue my growth as a pharmacist here.

Advice to residency candidates: Find a residency program that cares about you as a resident as well as a person. Search for a program that values your development as a pharmacist, but also your physical and mental health throughout residency. It’s easy to focus solely on your job as a resident, so having an RPD and preceptors who understand the importance of work-life balance is key. Another great piece of advice I would pass on is to step out of your comfort zone. Give yourself space to grow by exploring new ideas and taking on roles that make you uncomfortable.
